Student Impact

Over the past year, the Nordonia City School District has made over $4 million in budget cuts to try to balance its budget. Some went into effect in the previous school year and others began within the 2011-2012 school year. These cuts impact every child. They all limit the district’s ability to provide the well-rounded education that our children deserve and need to be prepared leaders in their global generation.

54 teaching and non-teaching positions have now been eliminated:
  • Class sizes K-12 have been dramatically increased
  • Larger class size affects discipline and individualized instruction
  • Elementary schools have as many as 31 students per class
  • The middle school has as many as 32 students per class
  • The reading intervention program (K-4) has been eliminated; classroom teachers must fill this gap in addition to managing their larger classes
  • There is no longer a gifted enrichment program (K-8)
  • Elementary art time has been reduced 33%
  • The foreign language program at the middle school has been eliminated
  • The family and consumer science program at the middle school is cut
  • The industrial technology program at the middle school and high school has been dropped
  • 193 course selections have been cut from the high school, affecting all students in all major education areas
  • Due to increased workload, teachers are no longer available in high school study halls to assist students needing extra help
  • The high school has reduced guidance office support services

Children have less access to extracurricular activities that keep them engaged during and after school:
  • The interscholastic sports program at the middle school has been cut in half
  • Student council at the elementary level has been abolished
  • High school freshmen teams have been eliminated except football. There will be no freshmen softball, baseball, basketball, or volleyball teams
  • The Lee Eaton evening choir program has been cut
  • The middle school spelling bee has been eliminated
  • There is a heavier reliance on student fees to fund existing programs. Sports fees for the 2011-2012 school year have been increased
  • Due to reliance on fees, numerous activities have the potential to be cut if not enough children are available to participate

Staff who help maintain discipline and create a positive school atmosphere have been reduced:
  • The Lee Eaton Associate Principal position has been removed
  • All class advisers (9-11) have been eliminated
  • Five fewer study hall monitors are available at Nordonia High School and study halls have as many as 78 students
  • Four fewer study hall monitors are available at Nordonia Middle School
  • Two fewer lunch aides are available at Nordonia High School and Lee Eaton Elementary School
  • One security monitor has been eliminated at Nordonia Middle School

School transportation has been reduced to the state minimum:
  • All high school busing has been cut
  • K-8 students who live less than two miles from their schools no longer have bus transportation.
